Keystone Defense Leads the Way in 10-7 Battle with Apprentice

LA PLUME, PA- Keystone College scored on its opening possession and turned in a strong defensive performance Saturday afternoon, falling 10-7 to the Apprentice School at the Keystone Turf Field and Track Complex.

The Giants held Apprentice to 202 yards of total offense and 67 passing yards, collected two interceptions and recorded seven tackles for loss, including three sacks. The game remained tied at 7-7 from late in the first quarter until a 49-yard field goal with 3:02 remaining provided the deciding points.

Nicholas DeFrancesco (Quarryville, Pa./Solanco) led Keystone with 10 tackles, including five solo stops. Jayden Barton (Delaware County, PA/Academy Park) followed with nine tackles and a team-high three tackles for loss, accounting for 11 yards. Barton also recorded a sack, while Mike Evans () contributed a sack and an interception. Sean Owens (Waymart, PA/Western Wayne) added an interception and four solo tackles.

Keystone's defense set the tone on the opening series. With Apprentice facing third-and-four at midfield, Evans brought down the quarterback for a two-yard loss to force a punt.

The Giants quickly capitalized. Trevin Arnold (Newport, PA/Newport) connected with Dymear Hill (Camden, NJ/East Side) for 39 yards on Keystone's first offensive snap, moving the ball to the Apprentice 18-yard line. Following a penalty and a four-yard Arnold run, the quarterback found Quinten Barclay (Carlisle, PA/Carlisle) for a 19-yard touchdown. Jaedyn Sanchez (Wilkes-Barre, PA/Wilkes-Barre) added the extra point to give Keystone a 7-0 lead with 10:34 left in the first quarter.

The scoring drive covered 57 yards in three plays and took just 1:38.

After Apprentice tied the game late in the opening quarter, Keystone's defense kept the visitors out of the end zone for the remainder of the afternoon.

Owens intercepted a pass at the Keystone 22 on the first play of the second quarter. When a turnover on the next snap gave Apprentice possession inside the Giants' 10-yard line, Keystone delivered another stop.

Elijah Houdershieldt (Carbondale, PA/Carbondale Area) dropped the quarterback for a six-yard loss during the series. Later, with Apprentice facing first-and-goal from the four, Evans and Stephen Barnacz (Helmetta, NJ/Spotswood) combined to stop a run for a two-yard loss. Evans intercepted the next pass near the goal line and returned it to the Keystone two, keeping the score tied.

The Giants moved away from their own goal line behind Ethan Sadler (Endwell, N.Y./Maine-Endwell), who carried for gains of five, three and three yards to pick up a first down. Arnold later connected with Barclay for 19 yards to extend the possession.

Jayvon Swann (Chesapeake Beach, MD/Northern) added a six-yard sack on Apprentice's next series, forcing another punt. Before halftime, Keystone threatened again when Arnold found Carly Merise (Seaford, DE/Sussex Academy) for 24 yards and added runs of seven and 10 yards to help the Giants reach the Apprentice 16. The teams entered the break tied at 7-7.

Keystone continued to get stops throughout a scoreless third quarter, holding Apprentice to three consecutive three-and-outs. Jermaine McCray (Middletown, NY/Middletown) and DeFrancesco combined to stop a third-and-three rushing attempt for no gain on one series, while Barton ended another possession with a tackle for loss on third down.

Owens also helped with field position, placing a punt at the Apprentice 15 midway through the quarter.

After a blocked punt gave Apprentice possession at the Keystone 16 late in the third, the Giants again prevented a touchdown. Houdershieldt and McCray made tackles on consecutive plays to open the fourth quarter, and a missed field goal kept the game even with 13:42 remaining.

Keystone then put together an 11-play possession. Frankie Leyshon (Lake Ariel, PA/Western Wayne) converted two third downs through the air, finding Hill for seven yards and Merise for 18 yards. Sadler added consecutive runs of seven and eight yards as the Giants advanced to the Apprentice 33 before a sack and fumble ended the drive.

On the ensuing possession, Barton made two key plays to push Apprentice backward. He stopped a run for a four-yard loss and later recorded a six-yard sack. The visitors ultimately converted the 49-yard field goal to take a 10-7 lead, and Keystone was unable to answer on its final possession.

Arnold finished 8-for-15 passing for 116 yards and a touchdown without an interception. Leyshon added 25 passing yards. Hill led Keystone with 46 receiving yards on two catches, Merise caught three passes for 44 yards, and Barclay finished with three receptions for 38 yards and the touchdown. Dontay Armstrong (West Philadelphia, PA/West Philadelphia) added a 13-yard reception.

Sadler led the ground game with 45 yards on 16 carries. Swann, Houdershieldt and McCray each finished with four tackles, while Evans recorded three tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss.

Keystone stays home looking to get back in the win column as the team welcomes East Coast Prep on October 24, with kickoff slated for 1 PM.
